Southern Hills Country Club has been a private country club since it was established in 1936. The land on which the country club is located was donated by Waite Phillips, an oil man that originally thought the idea was not feasible. As the Chairman of the First National Bank of Tulsa and quite a well to do citizen of Tulsa, Mr. Phillips did donate the land for the country club, but refused to back it financially. He gave Cecil Canary and Bill Warren, the original supporters of the idea, two weeks to acquire pledges of $1000 each from 150 residents of Tulsa to finance the club in exchange for his donation of the land. The money was raised and the Southern Hills Country Club was born.
Today, the country club is an integral part of the Tulsa golf homes community and has 960 members. The 18-hole course was designed by Perry Maxwell in 1935. It underwent renovations in 1999. The West Nine course was designed by Ben Crenshaw in 1992. There have been 14 major championships hosted here. They consisted of 2 Tour Championships, 4 PGA Championships, 3 U.S. Open Championships and several amateur championships. 
The Southern Hills Country Club has a fitness center with a weight room, cardiovascular equipment, physical and massage therapy and exercise classes. The clubhouse is 67,000 square feet and includes a mixed grill, formal dining room, patio dining during warm weather – from May to September – and banquet facilities. The banquet facilities can handle up to 400 people and there are various other smaller banquet rooms There is a ladies’ and a men’s locker room.
Residents of Tulsa golf homes can enjoy two swimming pools as well as a dive tank. There is a pool house for the convenience of guests. There are four indoor tennis courts and eight outdoor tennis courts. Additionally, a pro shop provides many of the items needed by golfers.
